Who Is Considered Most Vulnerable for Sexual Assault?
Kevin Biniazan—July 16, 2019
Sexual assault can happen to anyone, but there are statistics that detail which individuals are considered the most vulnerable. While we do not promote these numbers as something to be concerned about, we want those who may be at risk to understand the factors involved so they can protect themselves, as well as understand what rights they have.
Here are some of the facts regarding sexual assault victims and statistics that show who is most vulnerable:
- Age range: Of the victims who suffer from sexual assault, a large majority (54%) of the victims are between the ages of 18 and 34. The next highest number is 28%, encompassing 35 to 64 years old, 15% are those between the ages of 12 and 17, and 3% are over the age of 65.
- College students: In 2015, roughly 89% of all campuses reported zero incidents of rape. However, research shows that male college students are 5x more likely to be victims of sexual assault than non-student males. Female college students are 3x more likely to be victims of sexual assault than all other women.
- Familiarity: Many of those who are vulnerable know their attackers. In fact, 8 out of 10 rapes are committed by individuals who the victim knows, many of them committed by an acquaintance or former or current significant other.
The reports show that 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men total will experience some sort of sexual assault over the course of their lifetime. It’s important for survivors to report the incident and seek counsel to hold their attackers fully accountable.
